Dr. Kevin McGowan,
Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents, Students, Families and Friends of the Brighton School Community,

As the New Year begins and the first semester concludes, the time is ripe for considering the promise of the next several months while reflecting on the outstanding work of this past year. Thank you for your support as the new school year began with a great first semester. Your cooperation as parents and community members helped our students get the school year off to a great start. The energy and excitement of those first few weeks continues today as our students and staff are fully engaged in another exceptional year. This is the ideal time of year to consider the possibilities of the next several months and to keep reflecting on student goals for this school year. Throughout the coming months your children will be making great strides towards preparation for the next school year. Thank you again for your partnership in this exciting journey.

Just as you and your children consider goals for learning and growing throughout the year, the district is engaged in an exciting process of strategically planning our efforts for this year and next. We are constantly measuring our progress in meeting the Board of Education’s annual goals for this current year. One of those goals was to work on the development of an “ongoing” strategic planning process that is collaborative and helps us to connect all of our efforts towards meaningful district goals.

We are well on the way to refining this strategic planning while also aligning it to our budget process. The idea is to all know where we are going, to work together to get there and to know how and why these efforts should be supported financially. We are very cognizant of the current economic climate and the challenges that lay ahead. We are committed to carefully analyzing our expenditures and looking for efficiencies in all areas. Please know that we are balancing a very careful review of expenses with our duty to support outstanding programs. We will maintain our focus on “caring for excellence” through continued innovation and growth while being sensitive to changing economic times.

As I mentioned in my last article, I am hoping to shed light on some of the great work that is being done by our students that goes beyond those highlighted through awards and recognitions. As you are well aware, our students are exceptionally caring and compassionate people. These values were especially apparent over the last week as a wide variety of groups jumped to action in support of Haitian earthquake relief efforts. Students at FRES, TCMS and BHS spearheaded charitable projects to support the incredible work being done in this tragic situation. Supported by wonderful faculty advisors, students were engaged in work that once again shows their commitment to service above self. Although we reinforce these messages in our classrooms, they bring this spirit from home. Thank you for being an excellent example to your children.

Finally, as the second semester picks up steam I am sure that your families will be very busy supporting many school and community activities. I hope that you are able to note Brighton Night Off on March 17th on your calendars as an evening that you can spend together as a family without the hustle and bustle of a typical night. This special evening is sponsored by the Task Force for Healthy Communities/Healthy Youth and its participating members (including the Brighton Central School District, Town of Brighton, faith and youth organizations). The goal is to take one evening and emphasize the importance of families spending time together.

Have a great second half of the school year and thank you for your continued support of excellence.
