Art & Literary Magazine
About Galaxy...
What is Galaxy?
Galaxy is Brighton High School's award-winning art and literary magazine. Galaxy is not only a magazine, but a place where students can get feedback on their literary and visual works of art. We promote excellence in art and writing through constructive criticism and analysis.
We call for submissions from all students. Submissions are accepted in the Galaxy office (room 177), in Mrs. Burger's room (107) and through email (see contact page). The editors then choose three pieces to be discussed anonymously at the weekly meeting. These meetings place every Sunday from 7-9 pm. Meetings take place September through February at students' homes. Locations are announced on The Morning Show, posted on our homepage and sent in a weekly email to all students on our mailing list. (Want to be on the mailing list? Just contact us.)In March, those who have attended ten or more meetings have the opportunity to vote on the pieces they would like to see published in the magazine. The magazine is then laid out using Adobe programs InDesign and Photoshop and printed for distribution in late May. They are free with a $1.00 donation and are available to the student body and community.
Galaxy hosts other events throughout the year such as various contests, poetry cafes and the annual SoireŽ in March.
The 2009 - 2010 school year is our 56th year.
How can I get involved?
Any student can come to meetings and/or submit his/her work for publication. If you submit writing, you'll be notified of the date your piece is being read so you can come to the meeting if you choose. If you would rather be filled in on what people had to say, please indicate so on your submission or talk to an editor and you will receive notes on your piece. You must put your name on a submission or we can't accept it, though if you would like to be published anonymously later, we'll honor the request. Submissions are always read anonymously at meetings. Both writing and artwork can be submitted in the mailbox outside the Galaxy office door (177), homeroom 107, directly to our advisor (Mrs. Burger) or to an editor, and by email.
We're very friendly people here at Galaxy; all are welcome at our weekly meetings. It doesn't matter if you didn't come to the first one. Pop in halfway through the year if you like. Each meeting is a new packet, new pieces, and Galaxy always embraces new members.
