When a Brighton High School graduate was diagnosed with cancer during his freshman year of college, a group of high school students knew they had to take action.

The Kick Cancer's Button club started in April of 2006 as those students began selling button necklaces that they had made. The goal of the club was to raise $1,000 by June and donate it to the local hospital.

By graduation day, the club had donated $9,000! Teachers and students began wearing their trendy necklaces, and before the club knew it local news reporters were coming in to interview the members. Today, the club continues to raise money and donate 100% of the proceeds to teen-related cancer charities.

The $9,000 raised during that first spring was divided equally between the Golisano Children's Hospital and the Wilmot Cancer Center. The funds have been put to work in a variety of ways, all of which help to make young patients more comfortable.

Thus far this year, Kick Cancer's Button and the Annual Turkey Courage Bowl have donated $5,000 to Just Be Aware, a foundation begun by Jonathan B. Angelone, the student whose ordeal inspired the formation of Kick Cancer's Button. Those funds will support the foundation's mission of promoting practices that aid in the early detection of cancer in teens.
