2011-2012 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra

News from 2011-2012

The following twelve Brighton High School students attended the annual New York State Theatre Education  Association (NYSTEA) Conference in Callicoon, New York from January 6-8, 2012:  Hannah Geller, Murie Gillett, Peter Guidash, Cara Guth, David McFarland-Porter, Ben McLauchlin, Ilana Meeker, Hannah Pisher, Jessica Schwarz, Charlotte Smith, DazMann Still and Sophia Stone. 

Congratulations to two 8th grade band members for being accepted into the Hochstein Junior Wind Symphony!  These Twelve Corners Middle School students are Ryan Gao (clarinet) and Kelsey Lieb (percussion).

Congratulations to the following Brighton Central School District students for being members of the 2011-2012 Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, t
he highest level youth orchestra in the Hochstein School of Music and Dance's five-tier youth orchestra program:
TCMS 8th Graders:  Leah McCarthy and David Morse
BHS 9th Grader:  Chandrika Sanapala
BHS 10th Graders:  Ty Joseph, Sophia Stone, Rebecca Saltzman, Ben Ureles and Adrienne Zand
BHS 11th Grader:  Valerie Chen
BHS 12 Graders:  Karla Bradley, Nick Dubin, Mark Farnum and Andrea Ryan

Peter Guidash, a senior at Brighton High School, is a Harrington Scholarship recipients for the School of Choral Studies.  The School of Choral Studies was held in July 2011 at the State University of New York at Fredonia under the artistic direction of Dr. Hugh Ferguson Floyd, an acclaimed music director, conductor and educator.  Student rehearsed and performed as a 70-voice mixed chorus, received classes in musicianship (theory, aural skills), sectionals, studied voice and participated in opera scenes, musical theatre and small ensembles.  The School of Choral Studies performed at the Chautauqua Institution and in the Rosch Recital Hall at SUNY Fredonia under the direction of Dr. Floyd in a wide range of choral works.  The scholarship is in honor of a former NYSSMA Executive Director and donated annually by NYSSMA to be put toward attending the NYS Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) sponsored by SED. 

The Monroe County School Music Association (MCSMA) presented the Donald Coley Scholarship to Brighton High School junior, Rachel Schneider.  This scholarship is awarded annually to a student that lives in Monroe County that is accepted to perform in either the New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) orchestral program or the Jazz program.

BCSD music teachers, Ms. Jennifer Muhl and Ms. Beth Remming, are the newly appointed Elementary Orchestra Coordinators for the Monroe County School Music Association (MCSMA).  Ms. Muhl directs 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestra at Twelve Corners Middle School and Ms. Remming directs orchestra at French Road Elementary School and 6th grade orchestra at Twelve Corners Middle School.

Congratulations to Melanie Mashner!  The Brighton High School 10th grader is the winner for harp in the New York State Music Teachers Association (NYSMATA) Empire State Competition High School Instrumental Division held at Itaca College on October 22, 2011.

Five Brighton High School students have been accepted into the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) Holiday Chorale this year.  Congratulations to Emily Kautz, Alex Melnik, Lianna Mendelson, Celeste Pellegrino and Jamie Wisset!

Congratulations to Valerie Chen for being accepted into the ASTA (American String Teachers Association) National High School Honors Orchestra!  The high school junior will attend the 2012 ASTA National Conference on March 21-24, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Art work by Brighton High School students will be displayed during the month of October at the Greater Rochester International Airport, 1200 Brooks Avenue, Rochester, New York 14624.

Galaxy was awarded First Place with Special Merit by the American Scholastic Press Association for their 2011 magazine.  The theme of color in their ROYGBIV edition carried through the layout and artwork throughout the magazine.  Galaxy editors are looking forward to attending the Empire State Scholastic Press Association conference on October 21, 2011 at Syracuse University and receiving critique of their 2011 edition.

More than 40 Brighton High School editors and staff from Galaxy, Crossroads, and Trapezoid attended the 2011 Empire State Scholastic Press Association (ESSPA) conference and award ceremony on the campus of Syracuse University on Friday, October 21, 2011.  Students participated in workshops and contests with other student publications from around the state.  The culmination of the day was an awards ceremony honoring the publications produced during the 2010-2011 school year.  Listed below are the awards given to BHS publications:

A string quartet from SUNY Fredonia visited TCMS on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.!  Members that are part of the String Experience 2011 played for the 6th Grade Orchestra from 2:15-3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.  One movement from Beethoven's Quartet, Op. 18, No. 4 in C minor was offered along with a talk about the genre of the string quartet and the ground-breaking compositions that Beethoven offered in the Op. 18 set.
