  • BCSD Reopening and Rethinking Task Force 

    Dear Brighton Families, 

    We hope you and your families are well. Thank you for providing us feedback on reopening through a Thought Exchange last month. We analyzed your feedback and spent time discussing it during our Blueprint Planning Day.  

    We are awaiting guidelines from the state before we will be able to plan in earnest for reopening. We will ask for additional feedback and input if it’s needed based on what the state guidelines require us to plan for. 

    We have developed the following plan for reopening: 

    The BCSD Reopening and Rethinking Task Force (BRRTF) will be convened to develop plans for submission to the state. The BRRTF will be broken up into two separate working groups: Operations (health, safety, transportation, food service, cleaning, and general operations and maintenance concerns) and Instruction. The groups will include administrators, teachers, staff, nurses, and parents through the PTSA. 

    Below is the timeframe for the task force: 

    • The week of July 13: State guidance will be received and analyzed. Groups will be organized, information will be disseminated, and additional community feedback will be gathered if it’s needed. 
    • The week of July 20: The two working groups will meet to review and draft plans. Regional coordination will be considered. 
    • The week of July 27: Plans will be revised, completed, and submitted to the State Education Department. 
    • The week of Aug. 3: Plans will be communicated to the community. We will consider state action prior to the communication. 

    Our priority as a school community will be the safety of our children, families, and staff. We will follow all rules and regulations. We are also committed to returning and doing everything possible to do so. However, it is important to note that decisions regarding reopening will not be in our hands. The Governor has made that very clear. What we can control is our own ingenuity, creativity, and commitment within the rules we are given. As the name of the task force indicates, we need to consider reopening as our first priority, but we also will need to collaboratively rethink how we support students, families, and staff.

    The good news is, we feel that we have the technology and infrastructure to support a continuation of learning with significant modifications.

    Our students all have accounts in Schoology and SeeSaw. We need to make sure that you have accounts set up in these online environments as well, so that you can also access the lessons they are being asked to complete. We realize that this will be different for every child, but we are committed to making sure you have the necessary knowledge and skill to do this.

    Instructions for SeeSaw accounts for students in grades K-5 were sent home with children on Friday. They can also be accessed here:

  • How can I access free meals for students?

    Brighton Central School District won't be serving meals after June 26. Residents that would like to continue to receive meals are welcome to utilize programs run by neighboring districts. These districts normally run summer programs and are able to handle the influx of districts that are not eligible to run summer programs. There are programs in East Rochester, Rush-Henrietta, East Irondequoit, Gates-Chili, Greece, and Rochester. We will provide information to customers on our last day of service.

  • What about summer school?

    We have been informed that our regular summer school program at BHS, for students who need credit recovery or to retake a course, will need to be a virtual experience. We are in the process of developing that program and will provide details as they become available. 

    We have also received word that most, if not all, summer programming will not be able to be offered in person. We will announce additional cancellations as these details are confirmed but did want you to know that it is unlikely that we will be hosting any in person programming here this summer. 

    We will be offering additional food programming throughout the summer and helping families of first responders locate child care opportunities.

  • What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

    Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause a range of illnesses from the common cold to severe diseases such as MERS, SARS, and can lead to pneumonia in some patients. In December 2019, a new coronavirus was identified in Wuhan, China, and in February, the World Health Organization (WHO) proposed an official name for the disease: COVID-19. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a different strain than other respiratory viruses and information about it is evolving.

  • What are the Symptoms of COVID-19?

    The vast majority of patients with COVID-19 will have mild respiratory illness, with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Severe complications can include pneumonia. If you have any of these symptoms, please stay home from school and contact your primary care physician or seek medical attention if you have these symptoms. We will be flexible with attendance policies while this virus is a concern.

  • Can Someone Who's Infected Spread Coronavirus (COVID-19) if They Don't Have Symptoms?

    The virus spreads most easily when an infected person has symptoms. But some spread might be possible before symptoms start. It can take 2–14 days after someone is exposed to the virus for symptoms to show up.

  • Will the District Cancel Events or Trips?

    • We have also decided to postpone or cancel a variety of upcoming events.
    • Please click here to review a list of events and to check their status.This table will be regularly updated.
    • Specific follow-up for certain events and trips will be sent by individual coaches, advisors, teachers or administrators.
    • We will wait until we absolutely have to before canceling events, trips, and activities. We are considering alternatives and our ability to reschedule. We really don’t want students to miss out on once in a lifetime opportunities.

  • How Can I Protect Myself?

     Public health professionals recommend the following practices:

    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
    • Avoid large crowds and keep at least 3 feet from other people when outdoors or when someone nearby is visibly sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick
