Chemistry 7

    The Chemistry 7 program involves the study of the structure and properties of matter, atoms and the periodic table. The course will help students to gain an appreciation for science as it applies to the world around them in their every day lives. This is accomplished through hands-on labs, classroom activities, computer lab workshops, projects and demos.

     


    Course Content

    The following topics are taught in Chemistry 7:

    Unit 1 - Exploring Physical Science - topics will include: What is Science?, Laboratory Safety, Equipment, Scientific Methods, Metric System, Measuring Mass, Volume and Length

    Unit 2 - Properties of Matter - topics will include: Density, Physical Properties, Phases of Matter, Phase Changes, Chemical Properties, Chemical Changes

    Unit 3 - Classification of Matter - topics will include: Mixtures with emphasis on solutions, and Pure substances (elements, compounds )

    Unit 4 - Structure of Matter - topics will include: History of Atomic Theory, Subatomic Particles, Bohr Model

    Unit 5 - Periodic Law - topics will include: Periodic Table, Valence Electrons, Metals, Nonmetals , Families of Elements

    Unit 6 - Atoms and Bonding - topics will include: Chemical Bonding, Ionic Bonds, Covalent Bonds, Metallic Bonds, Valence/Oxidation Numbers, Writing Chemical Formulas, Naming Compounds
