Children with Self-Injurious Behaviors - 14-15 Nurses Conference
Children with Self-Injurious Behaviors
James Wallace MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Approximately 2 out 10 children and adolescents attending school every day suffer from a mental health concern. 8 out of 10 of those students with mental health diagnoses never see a Mental Health provider and are managed by their schools, primary care providers and families. Some engage in behaviors that are frightening and confusing to the staff educating them. Dr. James Wallace will address the issue of self-injury with a focus on the most useful interventions for “new” cutters as well as for repetitive self-injurers. He will also discuss how self-injury begins and how we may accidentally reinforce the pattern with our efforts to help.
This session is suitable for school nurses, school psychologists, school counselors, teachers and administrators dealing with the complexities of mental health concerns among students in schools.WHEN: Wednesday, April 8, 2014TIME: 3:30 - 5:30LOCATION:Council Rock Primary School - Auditorium600 Grosvenor RoadRochester, NY 14610
