    About German

German, like English, is a Germanic language.  German is spoken by over 120 million people worldwide and is the most prevalent language in the European Union.  It is among the top 10 most spoken languages in the world.  It is the 2nd most widely learned and taught language worldwide next to English.  More Americans claim to have German heritage than any other national ancestry, according to the report for 2000 released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau.  With Germany as America’s largest European trading partner, German is an important language for international business, politics, engineering and medicine.  Learning German also complements the study of the arts, especially music.  Students taking German have scored consistently higher on SAT's leading to greater options in College.  8th grade German students travel to the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont and in high school, they can participate in the Brighton-Bremen foreign exchange program.

The Brighton German AP Program has been identified as the best program in the US and in the world.  This is a testament to the whole program, which has been recognized for its excellence on numerous occasions.  Each year Brighton German students take top honors in the National AATG Exams.  Each year our students earn scholarships given by the Steuben Society and on several occasions the top national prize given by the American Association of Teachers of German , an all expense paid trip to Germany during the summer, has been awarded to a Brighton student.  We take pride in our program and in our students.  Brighton German teachers have also been honored for awards for excellence in teaching German.  Our philosophy of teaching and learning aims at high academic standards while acknowledging that learning takes place when it is interactive and fun.
