    Map of Proposed Land Purchase

Qualified residents of the Brighton Central School District will vote on two propositions in a special vote on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Central Administration Building, Gymnasium, Door 4, 2035 Monroe Ave.

Proposition 1: Brighton Central School District is interested in purchasing two parcels of land adjacent to Brighton High School. They are currently owned by Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, 1200 South Winton Road. Parcel B is 0.92 acres and Parcel C is 1.36 acres. The asking price for the two parcels is $422,000. The District proposes using funds in its existing District Building Reserve Fund for this purchase and it would not increase the budget or tax levy and would not incur financing costs. Withdrawing funds requires voter authorization.

Proposition 2: Brighton Central School District is proposing the creation of a new $20 million Building Capital Reserve Fund with an estimated useful life of 10 years. The District’s current fund has exhausted its funding limits. Contributions to the fund would include year-end surplus funds and proceeds from the sale of the Brookside school building.

In order to vote, a person must be a resident of the Brighton Central School District for at least 30 days immediately preceding the vote, and must be at least 18 years of age and a citizen of the United States. No registration is required, but prospective voters should bring one proof of residency such as a driver's license or non-driver’s ID.

Absentee ballots are available to qualified school district voters. An application for a ballot must first be completed. Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the District on or prior to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or on or prior to Jan. 24 if the ballot is to be picked up by the voter. Click here for more information on applying. Completed absentee ballots must be received by 5 p.m. on the date of the vote.

The District is holding a public hearing about the special vote at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 in the Administration Building, Board Room, 2035 Monroe Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14618. It will also be televised on Cable Channel 1303 and streamed at www.bcsd.org/livestream.

Why The District Wants to Buy This Land

Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church approached Brighton Central School District with an offer to buy two parcels of land at market value. The market value was determined by a third party licensed appraisal firm.  The land and incidental closing costs would be purchased for $422,000 using funds in the existing District Building Reserve Fund. The purchase would not increase the budget or tax levy. Additionally, there wouldn’t be any financing costs incurred.

Parcel B (0.92 acres) is adjacent to the Brighton High School Parking Lot. The purchase would create an opportunity for Brighton Central School District to create a safer entrance and exit for the BHS parking lot.

Parcel C (1.36 acres) is next to Brighton High School’s athletic fields (specifically the JV baseball field). The purchase would allow Brighton Central School District to expand its green space in this area.

If Brighton Central School District did not purchase these parcels of land, they could be purchased and used by another entity. The purchase would protect these parcels from other types of development which wouldn’t be complimentary to Brighton High School and the District.
