FRES Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

French Road Elementary School is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in October. As part of the month, the school hosted a few special guests.

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, Rochester Fire Department firefighters Juan Sierra and Jackeline Vazquez talked with third graders about fire safety, their jobs as firefighters, their Hispanic heritage, and their favorite foods and aspects of Hispanic culture. The firefighters also taught them several firefighting words in Spanish.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, Henry Padron, a retired bilingual teacher from the Rochester City School District and the owner of Hipocampo Books, taught fifth graders about Bomba/Plena music of the Afro Latinx community. It was an interactive assembly where students were able to play instruments and dance to the music.

On Friday, Oct. 14, the whole school attended an assembly led by Alma de Mexico. Students learned about Dia de Muertos and experienced folkloric dance and music originating from Mexico.
