Mark Kress Named Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics

Brighton Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kevin McGowan has announced the selection of Mark Kress as the new Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics.

“We could not be more excited to have Mark joining our team,” Dr. McGowan said. “Over a long period of time, he has demonstrated a commitment to supporting each student in every sport across all levels and connecting with youth athletics in his community. Mark’s varied experiences and depth of knowledge in the health and physical education area will benefit the health, wellness, and development of all students. Through a rigorous process involving a wide variety of stakeholders, Mark also demonstrated a desire to be a collaborative, committed, and thoughtful communicator. We’re eagerly anticipating the significant impact that Mark will have on our community.”

Mr. Kress has been the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at Livonia Central School District since 2008. Throughout his time in the district, they have experienced a great deal of success in a variety of sports. Mr. Kress was instrumental in creating an athletic department mission and vision with a focus on creating a positive culture and developing athletes in and beyond the sport. Mr. Kress has developed strong relationships with the Livonia community sports programs, as he understands the importance of community engagement, getting students involved, and nurturing talent at an early age.

Before that, he served as a health and physical education teacher at Livonia High School. Mr. Kress also taught physical education, health, and environmental science in Mount Morris and Wayland-Cohocton schools. He has coached football, baseball, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls basketball, and boys soccer at the varsity, JV, modified, and/or youth levels.

Mr. Kress earned a bachelor of science in health science and master of science in health education from SUNY Cortland. He received his school building leader and school district leader certificate from SUNY Brockport.

“I am excited to be a part of the Brighton Bruins family as the next Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics,” Mr. Kress said. “I look forward to developing strong relationships with the staff, coaches, community, and athletes as we continue to drive forward Brighton’s long tradition of excellence.”

Mr. Kress will start on Jan. 8. The District thanks Chris Stuff for serving as the interim director for the first part of the school year.
