For the fourth year, Twelve Corners Middle School incorporated Honor Flight into its curriculum. Seventh graders learned about Honor Flight Rochester and wrote letters to veterans that they opened during mail call on their flight to Washington, D.C. Many of the veterans wrote letters back to thank the students.
One veteran, Richard Schottmiller, visited the middle school to thank the students in person and answer questions. Schottmiller was a Special Counter Intelligence Agent in the Army from 1956 to 1959.
Honor Flight’s goal is to take every World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran from the Rochester area to visit and reflect together at Washington, D.C. memorials built in their honor. To date, 3,101 veterans have gone on a trip since the local organization began full-scale flights in 2009.
