Over the past two years, French Road Elementary School students have participated in The Butterfly Project. The artistic and educational project memorializes the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and honors its survivors. It’s a global and unifying memorial that uses the lessons of the Holocaust to teach tolerance, remember the past, act responsibly in the present, and create a more peaceful future. Every butterfly painted memorializes a children that was lost and symbolizes a voice that is gained.
Students of Michelle Close, Elizabeth Eden, Corie Gottfried, Julie Lanovara, Rebecca Rauscher, Ina Sham, Heather Tellex, and Robin Vordonis painted the butterflies. Students also read books about the Holocaust and listened to the experience of Holocaust survivor Lea Malek.
