Crossroads, Galaxy, and Trapezoid Earn Top Honors at ESSPA Conference
Three Brighton High School publications once again earned top honors at the Empire State School Press Association’s conference in October. The awards ceremony, which was held at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, recognizes excellence in student publications. The 2019 awards reflect the students’ work during the 2018-19 school year.
Galaxy (BHS’ literary magazine), Trapezoid (BHS’ newspaper), and Crossroads (BHS’ yearbook) all received Gold Awards for Best All-Around Publication, the highest honor a publication can receive in New York. Many staff members of each publication also received individual awards.
Trapezoid received the Gold Award for Best All-Around Newspaper, Most Improved Publication, and Best Online Publication. Individual Gold Awards went to: Austin Smith and Grant Ashley for Service to School; Chase Cohen for Designer (Portfolio); and Madelaine Hastings and Nadia Alzoubi for Editorial Cartoon (Portfolio). Individual Silver Awards went to: Tanya Hermann for Editorial Cartoon (Portfolio); Jyla Serfino for Review Writing (Portfolio); Bizzy Merz, Henry Berger, Aelis Spiller, and Cole Kuczek for Editorial Page; Hridesh Singh and Salman Syed for Feature Layout (Portfolio); Sean Lee for Feature Photograph; Finn Mahan and Andrew Guo for News Writing; and Finn Mahan for Sports Feature. Individual Bronze Awards went to: Patrick Boese for Review Writing (Portfolio); Nitin Chockalingam, KyunJun Hwang, Aelis Spiller, and Cole Kuczek for Editorial Page; Sean Lee for News Photographer; Cooper Cohen for Feature Photograph; and Hassan Mohiuddin for Sports Feature. Individual Honorable Mention Awards went to: Peter McGowan for Review Writing; Esma Okutan for In-Depth Coverage; Sean Lee for News Photograph; and Sean Lee for Photographer (Portfolio). In the ESSPA’s On-Site Write-off Contest, Alice Yawman placed first, Andrew Guo placed second, Finn Mahan placed third, and Oren Poleshuck Kinel received honorable mention. In the On-Site Photo Shootout, Josie Hastings received honorable mention. Trapezoid is advised by Dr. Molly Healy.

Individual Silver Awards went to: Ekaterina Maisheva and Maya Finnigan for poetry. Individual Bronze Awards went to: Avi Van Edwards for Artwork/Illustration; Kiki Szende for Fiction; Julia Lako for Photography; and Emilia Delvecchio, Miya Libman, and Sophia Scaravillo for Poetry. Individual Honorable Mention Awards went to: Harrison Atwood and Sophia Scaravillo for Artwork/Illustration; Maya Finnigan for Fiction; and Harrison Atwater for Poetry.
