Brighton High School hosted its annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Jan. 8. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The experience helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.
Students needed to recite two poems apiece: One contemporary poem and one written prior to the 20th century. Students are evaluated and scored based on: Physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, level of complexity of the poem, evidence of understanding, overall performance, and accuracy.
Senior Maya Finnigan took first place, senior Ella Lyons took second, and sophomore Finn Mahan took third. Finnigan and Lyons advance to the regional competition in February.
