BHS Student Competes in State Poetry Competition

Maya at states

BHS student Maya Finnigan competed in the New York State Poetry Out Loud Competition at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in March. She qualified after winning the school’s competition and placing second in the regional competition at the College at Brockport.

At the state level, students needed to prepare three poems to recite. Finnigan recited “The Universe as Primal Scream” by Tracy K. Smith, “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley, and “Through a Glass Eye, Lightly” by Carolyn Kizer.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The experience helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
