Author and Illustrator Show CRPS Students “How to Send a Hug”
Council Rock Primary School hosted author Hayley Rocco and illustrator John Rocco on Nov. 16. The husband and wife team just published a new picture book, “How to Send a Hug.” The book is about a child who misses their grandma and decides to send them a "hug" in the form of a letter. In kid-friendly language and beautiful illustrations, the whole postal process is shown. Our guests talked with students about their creative process and their new book, the impact of giving and receiving mail, and even gave a short and simple lesson about how to write a letter.
It’s Hayley’s first book. John is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of many books for children, including “Blackout,” which received the Caldecott Honor.
After the assembly, classrooms held book birthday parties for “How to Send a Hug,” since it was just released. Each student received a letter writing kit that included a "Send a Hug" pencil, stationery paper and envelope, and a "Love" forever stamp to write or draw their own hugs and mail them.
Thank you to the Brighton PTSA for sponsoring the author visit; the Brighton Education Fund for purchasing supplies for kids to send their own hugs; and Author's Note bookstore for arranging the visit.
