BHS Student-Athlete Honored for Quick Thinking During Medical Emergency
Brighton High School student Jane Holmes was recognized for her quick action when someone experienced a medical emergency during a swim meet in the fall. Holmes received the “Do The Right Thing Award” from the Rochester Police Department on Feb. 26. The “Do the Right Thing” program is designed to seek out the outstanding youth of our community who have distinguished themselves as a role model for their peers. They achieve this status by committing “random acts of kindness” or by simply “doing the right thing.”
Holmes was nominated by Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello after she provided assistance to a parent who was experiencing a medical emergency during a swim meet at Brighton High School. She did this despite also being a participant in the swim meet as member of the Bruins swimming and diving team.
“While providing medical aid, she was incredibly cool, calm, and collected,” Bello wrote. “It looked like she was a seasoned professional at responding to emergencies. She was so great, that she began giving directions to both the lifeguards and adults, and everyone followed her lead until the ambulance arrived.”
The parent was treated and released from the hospital the same night.
Congratulations, Jane!
